General Photographic Workshops & Courses

Over the years, numerous people who have travelled with us have enquired about short photographic courses or workshops designed around their their particular interests and wants. We are based near Orvieto on the borders of Umbria, Tuscany and Lazio, where we have lived since 2003. Within easy reach there are any number of photogenic hill-top towns sat in spectacular scenery. Fields can be filled with poppies and cornflowers in May and June and there is a rich history from Etruscan sites to Medieval churches in evidence all around.

Although best known for his natural history work, Paul HD has illustrated numerous travel guides, photographic books and articles with his landscape and travel images. Between them Paul & Lois have built up a detailed knowledge of their part of Italy and elsewhere and can create workshops to suit your interests and provide you with numerous opportunities for photography, all with instruction from a working professional photographer. Lois has long experience in searching out photographic locations for professional work.

We cater for all levels of interest and ability: work covered includes basics camera techniques such as exposure, choice of lenses and composition to telling a story with images and the whole business of post processing to create your masterpieces. All teaching is carried out in an informal manner at your pace – you learn without effort.

A typical 3 day workshop would work as follows. Timings are roughly 9 to 5 but

Afternoon/evening before tour starts - Arrival and general introduction - we find out about your interests and where you would like to improve. Dinner together in Orvieto.

Day 1 9.00 AM – 5.00 PM - pick-up in Orvieto for a full day’s photography e.g. nooks & crannies around Orvieto, picnic lunch outside Orvieto, then we drive on to the evocative "dying city" of Civita di Bagnoregio set in an eroded volcanic landscape.

If you arrive by train then we would recommend using a B&B or hotel in Orvieto. There are also self-catering options available.

If you have a car and wish to explore before or after then we can recommend a superb B&B ourside Orvieto with incredible views back over this most photogenic of Italian cities. There are also any number of beautiful agriturismos in the countryside within easy reach of Orvieto with or without pools.

Obviously you can look on-line, select and book however, this is something we can easily do for you. We can provide you with a short-list of accommodation (with prices) we would choose for ourselves and you choose.

We price our courses by the day to try and be as flexible as possible but we realise no-one wants to sign a blank cheque. Here is an example of what it would cost for 2 people for a 3 (full working day) workshop with comfortable B&B accommodation for 4 nights and evening meals.

* Tuition, all travel on the workshop, lunchtime picnics and 1 dinner with wine, for 2 people €750 (or €375 per head)

* 4 nights B&B for two with breakfast budget circa €300 (or €150 per head)

Within Orvieto there are many excellent pizzerias, trattorias and restaurants. Budget around €25 per person upwards for a good 3-course meal with wine.

* Total spend (approx.) for three full days for 2 people - €1200.

B&B varies according to season and choice. There are also many self-catering apartments available that we can recommend and book for you.
